AxSpa symptoms

What are typical AxSpa symptoms?

Symptoms with AxSpa can vary quite dramatically. Men tend to get pain in the lower back, and women often feel their symptoms in the ribs and upper back.

This usually comes on gradually over weeks and/or months, and can come in waves, lasting weeks, months and/or years.

This pain will usually be worst at rest, like during the night (particularly the second of the night) or when sat down for long periods of time. and improve with activity. Sometimes you may find yourself very stiff in the morning, and this can last anywhere between 30 mins and the whole day.

Other symptoms for AxSpa include those listed in this graphic.

How Compass Health Clinic helps those with AxSpa

Our first step is to always help those with suspected AxSpa get referred on to a rheumatologist as quickly as possible. Whilst osteopathic treatment, exercise advice and pain management strategies have been shown to help and are all a part of how we treat those with ankylosing spondylitis at our Finchley clinic, the most important part will always be working with your rheumatologist so that they can help you get on the right medication. This is to prevent potential irreversible damage to the spine and other parts of the body from prolonged exposure to inflammation.

Once you’ve had your diagnosis confirmed, we provide support at Compass Health Clinic in numerous ways, such as providing supporting documents for your work so they know what you’re going through and how they can help, information for you the patient on how to pace yourself, as well manual therapy treatment, exercise advice and pain management support so you can get back to doing the things that you love most in a safe and efficient way.
