Tired of living with persistent pain?
If you have been dealing with a stubborn tendon or muscle problem that will not shift — plantar fasciitis that has lingered for months, a tennis elbow that flares every time you grip something, an Achilles that aches with every step — you already know that rest alone is not the answer. You need a treatment that actually helps damaged tissue heal, not just one that temporarily masks the pain.
At Compass Health Clinic in North Finchley, we offer shockwave therapy as part of a broader, evidence-based treatment approach that is designed to get you genuinely better, not just feeling better for a few days. We welcome patients from across North London, including Barnet, Whetstone, Muswell Hill, Friern Barnet, East Finchley, Southgate and the surrounding areas.

Why Our Approach to Shockwave Therapy Is Different
Many clinics in London offer shockwave therapy. What most of them do is strap you to a machine, deliver the shockwaves, and send you home. That might give you some short-term relief, but if nobody has worked out why the tissue became damaged in the first place, showed you what aggravates it (to stop it from getting worse), or given you the rehab tools to make sure you gradually increase the capacity of the tendon, the problem is likely to come back.
At Compass Health Clinic, shockwave therapy is never a standalone treatment. It is always part of a complete clinical approach that includes three things most clinics skip:
A Clinical Assessment Before Any Treatment
Before any shockwave device touches your skin, one of our [osteopaths] or [physiotherapists] will carry out a thorough assessment. This is not a quick five-minute check — it is a detailed case history and hands-on examination to understand exactly what is going on, why it happened, and what factors are keeping it from healing.
This matters because tendon and muscle problems rarely exist in isolation. A plantar fasciitis might be driven by how your calf and hip are functioning. A tennis elbow might be connected to how your shoulder and neck are moving. If you only treat the painful area without understanding the bigger picture, you are treating the symptom, not the cause. Our assessment-first approach means we find and address the root of the problem, so the results last.
Hands-On Treatment Alongside Shockwave
Every shockwave session at our clinic includes hands-on manual therapy as well. Our clinicians are trained osteopaths and physiotherapists, which means they can use a wide range of techniques to complement the shockwave treatment — joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, and targeted manual therapy to address the areas contributing to your pain.
This combined approach is more effective than shockwave alone because it addresses muscle tension, joint stiffness and movement restrictions that may be loading the injured tissue abnormally. You get the cellular healing benefits of shockwave therapy plus the immediate relief and improved movement from skilled hands-on treatment, all in the same session.
Tailored Rehabilitation — Not Just a Handout
This is where we really stand apart from other clinics. Every patient who receives shockwave therapy at Compass Health Clinic goes home with a personalised rehabilitation programme — specific exercises designed to progressively strengthen the injured tissue and build its capacity to handle the demands of your life and activities.
Rehabilitation is not an optional extra. It is the single most important factor in whether your recovery lasts. Shockwave therapy kickstarts the healing process at a cellular level, but it is the progressive loading and strengthening that builds the tissue back to full function. Without rehab, the tissue remains vulnerable and the problem is likely to return.
We provide your exercises with video demonstrations and clear instructions so you do not have to worry about remembering everything from your appointment. And we adjust your programme at every session based on how you are responding, because a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for tendon rehabilitation.

Our Clinical Expertise
At Compass Health Clinic, shockwave therapy is delivered by our full clinical team — not by a single practitioner or an assistant. Every clinician who delivers shockwave at our clinic is either a qualified osteopath or a physiotherapist, trained to carry out a full musculoskeletal assessment and to integrate shockwave into a complete treatment plan.
The clinic is led by Andrew Terry, an experienced osteopath and educator at the London School of Osteopathy, and Ali Gibson, a physiotherapist who works in both private practice and as an extended scope practitioner in the NHS — a specialist role that involves diagnosing complex cases, requesting scans, and managing onward referrals. Together, Andrew and Ali have trained the entire Compass Health Clinic team in the clinical reasoning, assessment skills and rehabilitation principles that underpin how we deliver shockwave therapy.
This means that whoever you see at our clinic, you are not just getting someone who can operate a shockwave machine. You are getting a clinician who can assess your problem thoroughly, treat it with skilled hands-on techniques, deliver shockwave therapy precisely, and build you a rehabilitation programme that gets you back to full function. That combination of skills is what makes the difference between temporary relief and lasting recovery.
Conditions We Treat with Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is most effective for chronic soft tissue problems — conditions that have been present for more than three months and have not responded to rest or other treatments. At our North London clinic, we commonly use shockwave therapy for:
- [Plantar fasciitis] — the most common reason patients come to us for shockwave. Research shows around 55% of patients achieve good to excellent results.
- [Tennis elbow] and golfer’s elbow — stubborn tendon pain on the outside or inside of the elbow that has not responded to rest and exercises alone.
- [Achilles tendinopathy] — both mid-portion and insertional Achilles problems respond well to shockwave combined with progressive loading.
- Shoulder tendinopathy and calcific tendinitis — shockwave can be particularly effective for breaking down calcium deposits in the rotator cuff.
- [Greater trochanteric pain syndrome] — lateral hip pain driven by gluteal tendinopathy or bursitis.
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) — common in runners, cyclists and anyone who loads their knees repeatedly.
- Chronic muscle tightness and myofascial pain — particularly in the upper back, shoulders and calves.
If you are unsure whether shockwave therapy is right for your condition, call us on 0208 088 2258 and we will be happy to advise. If shockwave is not the best approach for you, we will tell you honestly and suggest an alternative
Your first appointment begins with a full clinical assessment — a detailed conversation about your symptoms, history and goals, followed by a hands-on examination. If shockwave therapy is appropriate, we will explain why and begin treatment in the same session.
We deliver shockwave in blocks of three sessions, spaced about a week apart. The evidence shows that a minimum of three sessions is needed for shockwave to be effective, and we have found that this block approach gives patients the best results. Each session includes shockwave treatment, hands-on manual therapy, and an updated rehabilitation programme.
Most patients begin to notice improvement within the first few weeks, with continued progress over the following 6–12 weeks as the tissue strengthens through rehabilitation. Some conditions may benefit from additional sessions beyond the initial three, which we assess on an individual basis.
